Young, Strong, Energetic Groundnut Seller.
When I'm at the market, apart from purchasing an item, I'm conscious of the environment because the market is like a theatre, lots of drama happens therein. The last time I was at the market, a man that sells female wears, in a bid to catch my attention to look the his wares, called me severally but when he noticed I ignored him, he retorted "are you even a man or a woman?" SMH! Well, traders have lots of hurtful words stored up in their head that they could dish out to any willing person so I didn't reply, I moved on - that's what reasonable people should do anyway .😏😏.
Well, that aside...
If you know Kofar Wambai market, you'll understand better...
At the close of market, the roads are usually rowdy as everyone struggles to get a keke home at the same time. The roads are usually jam packed with cars carrying goods, keke carrying passengers and pedestrians who having stood for a long time, begin a journey to the main gate in a bid to get a keke.
The roads are so busy that you might be pushed or stepped on at any slightest opportunity. In the heat of all these, a keke driver tries to take advantage of the situation. He takes it out on a groundnut seller who tries to manoeuvre her way through the traffic. While she passed by his keke, he stretches his hand outside and reaches for her groundnut. I actually thought he was a potential customer, but no! She's a child so he felt it was alright to do what he did. I was pained as I passed the scene. I kept looking back to know what her reaction would be.
In my wildest imagination, I did not expect the clapback. She stood by the keke and demanded that her groundnut be returned. This girl in question wouldn't be more than eight years old. She resorted to dragging the groundnut from the man's hand. Can you beat that??? However this may sound, I was proud of her! 💪
I didn't watch the drama till the end but I wished I stayed a little longer. I was with someone so I couldn't have stayed back.
I like the prowess that lady showed despite being in the Northern part of Nigeria where it was almost impossible to challenge a man. Not when he's an elderly man.
There's nothing wrong in challenging a narrative that doesn't suit you. If it runs in opposition to your existence, please and please, challenge it.

DeleteMaybe in the end, she would not get him to return the groundnuts but she did stand up for herself and that says a lot.
