WHY I DON'T MAKE NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS

At the beginning of the year, I told my sister that the year 2020 was my year. I'm not exactly sure how I want things to turn out this year, but there are certain expectations I look forward to before the year ends. Well, she laughs. 'That's what everyone says at the beginning of a new year, isn't it?'

Every new year, people speak existence into the year even though there may be no concrete plans at achieving those goals. You'll see Church stickers with various inscriptions like...' 2020 my year of divine restoration, 2020 my year of financial breakthrough, 2020 my year to recover all...' Lots of these inscriptions are out there on doors, cars, and offices. Someone had earlier posted on her WhatsApp status that 2020 was her year of 'less work and more chop.' Owuya

So when people make new year resolutions, it seems to me that they want to fulfil all righteousness by merely saying what they'll do in the new year and after some weeks, they jump at their old life. Imagine someone that takes about five bottles of beer every day saying in the new year, he would refrain from beer. BTW, on 31st December, he would take up to 10 bottles to end the year after all, in the new year he would quit beer drinking. We all know how such stories end. When we gradually and consistently develop good habits, I bet you; there'll be no need for new year resolutions.

In JSS2, our form teacher asked every one of us to come in front of the class and tell our classmates our new year resolutions. I did tell them mine. Up until today, I still have not been able to abide by it (please don't ask what it is). This is an example of a new year resolution that fails.

It takes me about one hour to prepare for work and 30 minutes to get to work. I have to resume work at 8:am every day. I wake up by 6 am every day and still have a spare 30 minutes to do whatever I like. Since I'm not pressured to leave the house so early, I take my time to have a good sleep until my alarm tells me it's time to get myself off the bed. This year, I decided to push my wake up time to 5 am. Usually, this is not a big deal, but knowing I'm used to waking up at 6 am, it would be a bit challenging.

It worked on the first day (2nd January), but on the second day, it was a hard nut to crack. A trick I've always known about alarms was that you would keep the alarm far from your bed so that when it rings, you'll have to leave your bed to put it off. In the process of moving out of your bed, somehow, sleep would leave your eyes. In my case, my phone was in the parlour, and I'll have to leave the room to switch off the alarm. For the second day, though I walked to the parlour, the sleep didn't leave my eyes. I slept intermittently until I gave in because I can't come and kill myself.

I went back to the room and slept... My unconscious new year resolution had failed even before the year started. This is not to say I'm giving up. I'll keep trying until my body eventually gets accustomed to it.

I learned another trick. Early morning sleep is usually sweeter than usual so, instead of waking up at 5 am, I wake up by 2 am then go back to bed by 4 am and wake up by 6 am. This way, I get to enjoy part of the early morning sleep and still be productive at midnight. Do you feel me? 😎😎

I have other plans for the year too. I won't call them new year resolutions though, but I'll rather call them goals. Goals are more realistic because they span over a more extended period and make you sound more serious with life.😏😏

I'll read more books in the coming year too, and you should join me. I already started with Becoming a Leader by Dr. Myles Munroe. Meanwhile, check out pdfdrive.net to access a wide variety of books for free.

I found some interesting tips to spice up your 2020. You can check it out here.

Thanks for the trip to my little mind.

  1. Nice write-up. There are some people that actually follow through with their resolutions. Maybe, they don't get to achieve all but achieving some in itself is still a progress that should be commended. Let's hope 2020 gets better for us though.

  2. Wow. This is nice. I don't think you failed indeed though, success is a process, and failure is part of it. I'm rooting for the next one.

  3. Nice work! Everything written down here is true. People just state new year resolutions because others are doing. Habits that took years to form can't be stopped automatically because it's a new year, rather, everyday of our lives we should strife to become a better person than we were the previous day.

  4. I have to admit that you are realistic, and I think it is crucial for our development.
